Hi, I’m Darren and as your wedding photographer we’re going to spend quite a bit of time together on your wedding day. So here’s a 5 things you may like to know about me.
- It All Started With My Nan’s Camera
My Nan was a keen amateur snapper. That’s her standing by the window in the white dress. Wherever she went she took her camera and filled up hundreds of photo albums.
Whenever I came to visit her (that’s me in the tie and shorts at the front) she’d give me her Instamatic camera to play with. I got some amazing photos with it. The only trouble was she’d never loaded it with film!
Still the seed was sewn and from the age of 4 or 5 I already had a fascination with cameras and photos.
2. A Failed Synth Pop Career
Like a lot of teenagers in the mid to late 1980’s, I wanted to be in a band – particularly a synth pop band like my heroes Depeche Mode. I even got myself a synthesiser.
However, I soon discovered I couldn’t play or sing a note. My synth pop career was over before I realised it! But due to my music obsessions I had gotten into the music photography of Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn.
I figured if I couldn’t become a pop star then becoming a photographer was almost as rock ‘n’ roll.
3. I Kind Of Cheated on ITV Game Show “Family Fortunes”
In the mid 1990’s I ended up on the ITV game show, “Family Fortunes”, then presented by Les Dennis. That’s Les back middle, and me in front of him.
We went on to win the show, with me getting the final answers to bag it. Except, I’m not proud to say, I kind of cheated to win it. To be honest, it wasn’t really my fault – but I’ll tell you how if you book me as your wedding photographer 😉
4. I’m An International Award-Winning Street Photographer
Away from weddings my main passion is candid street photography. In 2016 I was delighted to be a winning finalist in the PDN Street Photo competition as selected by highly influential curator, writer and street photography historian, Colin Westerbeck.
I’ve also won numerous other awards for my street photography including being a finalist in the San Francisco Street Foto Festival 2019 and getting 2nd Place in the London Spring Photo Show 2019.
5. A Londoner Now Exiled On The North Somerset Coast
In 2021 I left London to move down to the North Somerset coast where my partner, Kirsten, is originally from. We live in the seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare with our small Shorkie dog, called Buddy.
I’m still getting used to the West Country accent and being so far from my beloved West Ham United FC.
Think I’d Be A Good Fit As Your Wedding Photographer?
If you think we’d get along and enjoy my natural, relaxed and documentary approach to wedding photography, then I would love to hear from you. Even though I am a Somerset based wedding photographer nowadays, I still shoot weddings across the whole of the UK and beyond.
